Your first decision will be deciding where to draw that power from. Here are the questions I would ask myself about your existing subpanel:.

practice electrical wiring diagrams diagram base website wiring

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then you should be safe using your existing subpanel. I decided to go another route and have a new subpanel installed in my basement. I went this route for a few reasons:. I was left with a brand new subpanel in the basement which I felt was ultimately cleaner and easier for me to tackle than the existing subpanel. I had no experience whatsoever with wiring when I first started.

The truth is that once you understand the basics of wiring it becomes more of a creative project than anything else. In essence, this is the starting point for understanding what it will take to rough in your basement electrical.

When you can understand how a run works everything starts to make a little more sense. For example, I have a total of 6 electrical runs in my basement. Those 6 runs are as follows:. You may be required by code to put your bathroom on a dedicated run, as the bathroom will require a GFCI plug, or a ground fault indicator. In my basement I used two different wiring gauges, 12 and 14, which deliver 20 and 15 amps respectively.

The smaller the gauge the larger the wire, hence the more amps it can deliver to your electrical run.

ASE Certification Practice Tests

Inspectors like to see 12 wiring used for plugs because they can handle a larger load and are less likely to pop your breaker or cause issues. I then make a run from one of my plugs up to the light switch. Because 14 gauge wire is thinner and easier to work with, why not just use 14 to go up to the light from the switch?

This is considered a no-no and your inspector will not approve this. Switches and plugs will make up part of your basement electrical runs, while lights will make up the other part.

You have to think about what will need constant power plugs and what will need to be controlled through a switch lights, fans, switched outlets. What happened to the awesome electrical rough in video detailing the distances, heights……etc of outlets, switches….

Can you recommend any similar vidoes……just when I reached the electrical stage the video no longer works. Thanks for the heads up, looks like the video was removed for some reason. This page is dedicated to Wiring Diagrams that can hopefully get you through a difficult wiring task or just to learn some basics in how to wire a 2-way switch3-way switch4-way switchoutlet or entertainment component diagrams.

If you don't see a wiring diagram you are looking for on this page, then check out my Sitemap page for more information you may find helpful.

Wiring Diagram

How a 2-Way Switch Works. The power source is coming in from the left. Notice the black wire is the only wire that we are controlling through the 2-way switch. You have an incoming hot wire black going to one screw it does not matter if you use the brass or silver screw on the side of the 2-way switch and a black wire from the other screw on the 2-way switch going to the load light, ceiling fan etc. The white wires are wire nutted together so they can continue the circuit. Just use your mouse pointer on this diagram and follow the current flow from black wire hot wire through the 2-way switch, then to the load and return through the white wire neutral.

This should give you a good basic understanding how the 2-way switch circuit works and will help you in adding or changing a 2-way switch. How a 2-way Switch Circuit Looks. So the circuit above when explained should give you a good concept on how this basic circuit works. When wiring a 2-way switch, this image on the left will show how the connections should actually look when all connections are made. Take notice of the ground wire. It's very important that the ground or bare copper wire is connected to the green screw on the switch.

All grounds are connected, and the ground is connected at the light when possible. If no connection is available, then attach the ground wire to the box in a solid way. How a 3-Way Switch Works.

When wiring a 3-way switch circuit, all we want to do is to control the black wire hot wire to turn on and off the load from 2 different locations. The diagram here will give you a better understanding how this circuit works and how a 3-way switch is wired. The source power black wire is coming in from the left.

It ties into the common on the left switch see image below. When the left switch is toggled, it connects to the upper circuit and now the circuit is open at the right switch which turns off the light. Toggle the right switch and it connects to the upper circuit and now closes the path and turns the light back on and so on. How a 3-Way Switch Circuit Looks.

So the circuit above when explained should give you a good concept on how this 3-way circuit works. When wiring a 3-way switch, this image on the left will show how the connections should actually look when all connections are made.

The best way to simplify wiring a 3-way switch is this. By looking at the moving 3-way switch above, the hot black wire coming from the power source will always attach to the common screw on the 1st switch in the circuit. Then the traveler wires are connecting both switches and it does matter which wire goes to which traveler screw.

Now with that said, just look at the switch again and look at the circuit. There you have it, 3-way switch wiring simplified.

It's very important that the ground or bare copper wire is connected to the green screws on the switches.Mitchell1 R obtains wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins, containing wiring diagram changes, from the domestic and import manufacturers.

These are checked for accuracy and are all redrawn into a consistent format for easy use. All system wiring diagrams are available in black and white format and may be printed depending on your program settings and available printer hardware.

In the past, when cars were simpler, diagrams were simpler. All components were connected by wires, and diagrams seldom exceeded 4 pages in length. Today, some wiring diagrams require more than 16 pages. It would be impractical to expect a service technician to trace a wire from page 1 across every page to page Removing some of the wiring maze reduces eyestrain and time wasted searching across several pages. Today, the majority of Mitchell1 R diagrams follow a much improved format, which permits space for internal switch details, and component and ground locations.

Components shown with a dashed line instead of a solid line indicate not all circuits are shown in this particular diagram circuits shown in system diagrams are typically applicable to that system only. The remaining circuits connected to that component will be shown in the appropriate system that they apply to. The Data Link Connectors wiring diagrams show the circuits by which the various on-board computers exchange information, and the diagnostic connectors used for diagnosis and their location.

The Ground Distribution wiring diagrams show all vehicle ground points, their location, and the components common to those ground points.

The Power Distribution wiring diagrams show the power feed circuits and the components common to those power feeds. Then, go to that system and locate the component within the wiring diagram. For example, if you don't know the specific system in which the ignition switch is located, look up ignition switch in the wiring diagram component location tables and go to the appropriate wiring diagram s which contain either full or partial views of the ignition switch.

The full view of the ignition switch is located in Power Distribution. The first listing for the component will be the full or most complete view of the component.

Additional listings will be partial views of the component. Not all components are used on all models. All components will have a partial view in Ground Distribution and Power Distribution. Data Link Connectors show connecting circuits between modules. Alternate names for components may be listed in wiring diagram component locations tables.

Mitchell1's Wiring Diagrams Mitchell1 R obtains wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins, containing wiring diagram changes, from the domestic and import manufacturers. The diagrams are drawn with the power source at the top of the diagram and the ground point at the bottom of the diagram. Component locations are identified on the wiring diagrams. Any wires that do not connect directly to a component are identified on the diagram to indicate where they go.

Use wiring diagrams to assist in building or manufacturing the circuit or electronic device. They are also useful for making repairs. For example, a home builder will want to confirm the physical location of electrical outlets and light fixtures using a wiring diagram to avoid costly mistakes and building code violations. SmartDraw comes with pre-made wiring diagram templates.

Customize hundreds of electrical symbols and quickly drop them into your wiring diagram. Special control handles around each symbol allow you to quickly resize or rotate them as necessary. To draw a wire, simply click on the Draw Lines option on the left hand side of the drawing area. If you right click on a line, you can change the line's color or thickness and add or remove arrowheads as necessary.

Drag a symbol onto the line and it will insert itself and snap into place. Once connected, it will remain connected even if you move the wire.

If you need additional symbols, click the arrow next to the visible library to bring up a drop down menu and select More. You'll be able to search for additional symbols and open any relevant libraries. You can also change the size and shape of your line hops. Select Show Dimensions to show the length of your wires or size of your component. Click here to read SmartDraw's complete tutorial on how to draw circuit diagrams and other electrical diagrams.

A schematic shows the plan and function for an electrical circuit, but is not concerned with the physical layout of the wires. Wiring diagrams show how the wires are connected and where they should located in the actual device, as well as the physical connections between all the components.

Unlike a pictorial diagram, a wiring diagram uses abstract or simplified shapes and lines to show components. Pictorial diagrams are often photos with labels or highly-detailed drawings of the physical components. If a line touching another line has a black dot, it means the lines are connected. When unconnected lines are shown crossing, you'll see a line hop. Most symbols used on a wiring diagram look like abstract versions of the real objects they represent.

For example, a switch will be a break in the line with a line at an angle to the wire, much like a light switch you can flip on and off. A resistor will be represented with a series of squiggles symbolizing the restriction of current flow.

An antenna is a straight line with three small lines branching off at its end, much like a real antenna.
